Firefighters were called to rescue a rare bird of prey that had got itself stuck up a tree.
A lead attached to the Harris Hawk had wrapped around one of the branches, 35ft high, at the rear of a house on Windsor Road, Whiston.

He had started to panic and struggle but was unable to free himself on Monday afternoon (October 6).

RSPCA officers had been alerted by those living nearby and were concerned about his welfare.

It is believed that the £400 bird had escaped from his owners after his lead had snapped.

Crews extended a ladder up the tree and rescue the bird before handing it over to the RSPCA.

Watch manager Dave Thomas said: "The bird had got stuck up the tree and was in a bit of a flap.

"We had to be careful when we rescued him because he could have done real damage with his claws.

"Obviously he must mean a lot to someone and I would urge them to contact the RSPCA."
