Saints were forced to cancel their homecoming at the last minute because of a power cut.
Hundreds of fans were left disappointed after a small fire at Knowsley Road cut off the electricity supply to the stadium.
Players, directors and staff had been having a private party on Saturday night after the Grand Final when the lights went of
f in the early hours of Sunday morning (October 5).
Homes on nearby Willow Road were also cut off. The celebration had been arranged at noon that day. More than 500 supporters had planned to turn out to say farewell to head coach Daniel Anderson, who is flying back home to Australia today, and to welcome the return of the team after their defeat at Old Trafford.
Apollo Perelini, Saints' fitness and strength coach is also leaving after setting up a sports academy in Dubai.
Stewards were at the entrance to the stadium as at least 100 fans, unaware of the problems, turned up only to be told the event had been cancelled.
Bob Singleton, ground safety officer, defended the club's decision to close the stadium.
He said: "We had no other choice, due to health and safety we are unable to hold an event without an electricity supply.
"We are not sure what caused the small explosion in the sub-station, it is currently being investigated.
"Scottish Power came out that morning and were unable to get things up and running until Monday."
He added: "Some fans wanted us to hold it on the pitch but we needed an electricity supply just for things like the PA system. Also, there was no way we could have held it at the town hall at such short notice."
Mike Appleton, Saints spokesman, said: "The club spent two weeks organising the event and like the players, is very disappointed that it could not formally say good-bye to Daniel.
"We would like to pass on our apologies to all fans and share their disappointment at cancelling the homecoming."
